Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

Overview

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, also known as the Tryambaka mantra, is a Vedic hymn to Rudra–Shiva associated with healing, protection, and liberation from the fear of death.

Devanagari

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

Roman

oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanam urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā ’mṛtāt

Sense (brief)

We worship the three-eyed One, fragrant and nourishing; may we be freed from death (as a ripe cucumber from the vine), not from immortality.
